OUR GLENRIDGE DNA

About Us

We love God passionately. He is our pursuit, passion and prize. We love his presence and his word. We cherish worshipping him together. We want to be radical for him, withholding nothing and giving everything because he alone is worthy of it all!

We love each other deeply. The community of God, the church, is his masterpiece displaying his wisdom to all creation. We pursue authentic, open, honest, real relationships where people are free to be themselves. We celebrate each other’s successes as if they were our own and quickly make up for each other’s weaknesses. We are those who will give every bit of ourselves to see others succeed and fulfill God’s call upon their lives.

We want to change the world in which we live, both near or far. We are ‘ordinary radicals’ compelled by love and empowered by Holy Spirit to continue what Jesus began in his earthly ministry. As his body here on earth, we want to participate with God in his mission from our own city to the ends of the earth. Every believer is a missionary, every place we live and work is our harvest field! Our desire is to meaningfully impact our city, our region, South Africa and every nation God leads us to. Whether through planting churches or establishing new congregations; whether through believers using their skills and unique gifting; our desire is to equip everyone to fulfill the mission of God!

Our Story

Glenridge originally grew out of an independent church called “The Invisible Church”, which was planted in Durban in 1976. In 1982 the “Invis” dissipated and a remnant started a new church called Glenridge Christian Fellowship. A young high school teacher Chris Wienand stepped forward to lead the church. Later, Chris met a dynamic and mature church leader, Dudley Daniel, who put solid apostolic foundations into the church. The church flourished, growing in maturity and numbers.

The church moved from The Albany Hotel to Parkview School, then to Glenwood High School and on to the D.L.I. Hall. Then we built our current venue on top of the Durban Station.

The church was named due to its initial impact into the Glenwood and Ridge areas, but because of its spreading influence into several nations, the name was changed to Glenridge Church International.

After fourteen years, Chris and Meryl Wienand handed over to Rory and Melanie Dyer in 1996. Now, fifteen years later, Rory and Mel hand over to Ryan and Melissa Matthews, who have been leading Kingsgate Church in London for the last three years. Ryan and Melissa were on the Glenridge eldership before moving to Kingsgate. Many have pioneered from the ranks of this community – many planting churches, others in various forms of leadership. We would love you to be a part our next chapter.

What We Believe

We believe the Scriptures, Old and New Testaments, are inspired by God and inerrant as they were originally given. (2 Timothy 3:16; 1 Corinthians 2:13)

We  believe God has revealed Himself as one God existing eternally in three persons, Father, Son and Holy Spirit; distinguishable yet indivisible; co-eternal and co-equal. (Matthew 28:19; 2 Corinthians 13:14)

We believe the Lord Jesus Christ, fully God and fully man, was conceived of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary and is the Saviour of humanity. (Luke 1:26-35; John 1:18; Isaiah 7:14, 9:6)

We believe God created humanity in His image free from sin, but humans rebelled through Adam’s sin and are born spiritually dead, with a sin nature and eternally separated from God. (Romans 5:12,18)

We believe that all Christians are called to a life of holiness, devoted to the Lord Jesus Christ and service to Him. (Ephesians 5:18; 2 Corinthians 6:14, 7:1)

We believe in the breaking of bread, commonly called communion or the Lord’s Supper, where the bread and the cup are the symbols of celebrating and remembering Jesus’ sacrifice. (1Corinthians 11:28-32)

We believe in water baptism by immersion as a confession by the believer in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ and an expression of faith and obedience to His command. (Matthew 28:19; Acts 2:37-41, 19:1-6)

We believe in Eternal Life for the believer and Eternal Punishment for the unbeliever who has rejected the sacrifice and substitutionary work of Jesus Christ as Saviour on the Cross. (John 5:24, 3:16; Mark 9:43-50; 2 Thessalonians 1:9)

We believe that the universal church is the body of Christ where all believers join together to pursue the work of the ministry of Jesus Christ with Him as the Head. We believe that the local church is an autonomous group of believers who join their lives together in love. The local church is governed by the Scriptures and operates under the Lordship of Christ with Pastor-Elders directing the people toward faithfulness in Christ, together with the help of other ministry gifts such as apostles, prophets, pastor-teachers and evangelists. (Ephesians 1:22-23, Ephesians 4:11-16, 1 Timothy 5:17)

We believe in the baptism of the Holy Spirit, and subsequent empowering of believers by the Holy Spirit, enabling the church to fulfill God’s mission to the ends of the earth with boldness, in preaching the Gospel, in displaying His immanence and power in various ways through discipling all people groups and transforming culture with Heaven’s will. (Matthew 28:18-20, Acts 1:8, Matthew 6:9,10)
